Job Description
Be part of shaping our nation's history
This is an exciting time for Te Arawhiti – the Office for Māori Crown Relations. We're about to enter a new phase for the organisation, taking on a new name, with a strengthened focus on completing historical Treaty settlements and supporting Takutai Moana determinations.
Following Government's decisions last year to transfer the Māori Crown Relations portfolio to Te Puni Kōkiri, we've redesigned Te Arawhiti so it's ready to take on new challenges, while maintaining much of the unique mahi that makes the culture of our organisation so special. It's a great time to join us as we renew and recommit to our kaupapa.
We have a number of opportunities for people who are passionate about the kaupapa, enjoy learning, and achieving tangible outcomes. The work is varied and challenging. With a focus on honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and recognising Māori rights and interests, you'll work with people who share the same values.
At Te Arawhiti you'll be exposed daily to tikanga Māori, supported and encouraged to develop skills and an understanding of te ao Māori, and experience the personal connections and privilege of resolving historical Treaty claims and supporting the recognition of customary Takutai Moana rights.
Te Haeata/The Opportunity
The Principal Advisor is a key strategic lead advisor and subject matter expert (SME) supporting the Director and kāhui of Takutai Moana. The Principal Advisor will be managing and/or participating in specialist projects within the kāhui and across Te Arawhiti; providing professional leadership and enhancing the skills of advisors and analysts through quality assurance and staff development activities.
Supporting the administration of the Marine and Coastal Area Act 2011 (the Takutai Moana Act) and the Ngā Rohe Moana o Ngā Hapū o Ngāti Porou Act 2019, the role will be joined up with the development and policy work of Takutai Moana that is enabled through the Policy Team.
With a depth of knowledge of Māori tikanga and experience with Crown Māori perspectives and frameworks, you will bring a wealth of experience providing advice to Ministers, Cabinet Committees and Select Committees.
You will demonstrate a high level of business acumen and understand the importance of building and maintaining positive stakeholder relationships and effective networks across and within organisations. Your expertise in leading or managing complex successful work programmes and projects will allow you to provide professional leadership across the organisation, with other employees and peers looking to you for guidance on strategic matters.
This role is for a fixed term until 30 June 2026 to work within the team as we build the Takutai Moana engagement strategy and support iwi, hapū and whānau groups to achieve an outcome to their applicaton.
