- Try out a career in criminal defence law
- Enjoy supportive, experienced and professional colleagues
- Find out what it is like to be the voice of justice for people who need it most
The Public Defence Service is recruiting Summer Interns to join the team from November 2017 to February 2018. We have a position available in each of the following locations: Auckland, Manukau, North Shore, Waitakere, Hawkes Bay, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. You can apply for a maximum of three locations.
The Public Defence Service (PDS) is New Zealand's largest criminal law practice, providing high quality legal advice and representation in a full range of criminal cases. The PDS promotes the values of respect, integrity, service and the delivery of excellent service to its clients.
These roles offer a unique opportunity to gain experience and practice in a criminal defence law firm environment. You will work alongside experienced lawyers in a collaborative and supportive environment and across a variety of work. Your key tasks will include legal research, drafting documents, file organisation and administrative support. With client permission you may also have the opportunity to observe client interviews and court appearances.
We will consider applicants who are:
- law students in their penultimate year of study
- studying at a New Zealand university
- available for the whole period of the internship
- genuinely considering a career in criminal defence law
Given the busy and sometimes challenging work environment we are also looking for candidates who have proven communication and relationship management skills. You must be someone who is a versatile self-starter, service-focussed and able to manage a wide range of tasks.
Intern roles are unavailable for law graduates, however graduates are encouraged to apply for our rolling Law Graduate Programme – roles are regularly advertised on the Ministry of Justice careers page.
The salary is $35,560 (pro-rata over a three month period) and the positions are full time. Applicants can expect to hear from us within four weeks after the advertising closes.
To apply, complete the application form, attaching your CV, cover letter and a copy of your academic record. Apply for only three locations. Applications close on Wednesday 26 July 2017 at 5pm. If you have any questions please email email@example.com
